On July 21, Caixin reported that the State Council of China reviewed and approved the "Guiding Opinions on Progressive and Steady Urban Village Transformation in Mega and Super Cities." According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development's "2021 Statistical Yearbook on Urban Construction" released in October 2022, there are a total of 8 mega cities and 11 super cities in China as of the end of 2021.
The eight mega cities include Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Tianjin, and Wuhan.
The eleven super cities consist of Hangzhou, Dongguan, Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Nanjing, Jinan, Hefei, Shenyang, Qingdao, Changsha, and Harbin.
It is worth noting that according to the notice issued by the State Council in 2014 regarding adjustments to the standards for city size classification, cities with a permanent population of over 10 million in the urban area are classified as mega cities, while cities with a permanent population between 5 million and 10 million in the urban area are classified as super cities.
